Yippee skippee! Today we reached the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest reef system, and the day was filled with opportunities to go snorkeling, diving or out in the glass-bottom zodiac. Mike and I went snorkeling in the morning and it was quite incredible! The multi-colored corals were a marvelous sight, as were the equally colorful fish that inhabit them. I am including a couple of photos taken by Mark Thiessen, the NG photographer. The first shows a beautiful Moorish Idol fish and the second is of a White-tipped Reef Shark. You can’t get a feel for the true colors of the coral, but you can see a sampling of the variety.
This photo shows what is left at high tide of the beautiful sand beach that we snorkeled off in the morning. And it was smaller than this by the time the last person got into the zodiac. I took this from the glass-bottom zodiac as we skimmed over the water.
This last photo is a look at some of the corral through the glass of the zodiac, so it is not as sharp as it might be.
