The Westin resort was just a lovely place to stay. We had a nice room with a terrace that looked across the beach to the sea, and the grounds and pools were very lovely. It was a good place to relax before heading home on an evening flight on the 20th. We didn’t do any sightseeing but decided to just read, walk on the beach down to the next resort for dinner by the water one night, lay by the pool and drink a few fancy concoctions, etc. It was a great way to unwind before jumping back into the fray that I know awaits me when we return to Ann Arbor.
This photo shows the beautiful pools of the resort, where more than a few hours were spent being totally lazy.
And here you see one of the most bizarre events I have witnessed - the International Crab Race! A fellow came along to the bar with a container of small crabs, set them out on the mat he carried with him, and then took bets on which crab would reach the edge first. Each crab as named after a famous athlete from a different country. What amazed me the most is how many people were willing to place bets and how excited they got to watch their crab amble towards the finish line! I was above all that and did not participate - I mean, seriously, what fool would bet on Wayne Gretzky, Canada’s greatest hockey player, when he is racing in the heat of Fiji!
For our last night in Fiji, we decided to eat at the fancy restaurant by the beach and we had a prime table from which to watch the spectacular sunset. After a really delicious dinner, the entire staff of the restaurant, including the chef, came over to our table to sing us a farewell song, wishing us a safe journey home. Their voices were quite lovely and it was a fantastic wait to end what has truly been a fantastic trip!
